|Mysterious Pyrotechnology of Producing Artificial Millstone in Islamic Period of Iran|
Moslem Mishmastnehi, Berlin
Controlling fire is obviously one of the greatest human’s achievement through the history of technology. Most of the historical pyrotechnologies and their production processes are well known, but some of them such as manufacturing artificial millstones in Iran are among the forgotten and unknown technologies. Our investigation unfolds that artificial millstones were produced from simple and local raw materials, sand and silt, but through a complex process in high temperatures beyond 1100°C in voluminous and previously-unknown type of furnaces.
