The documentation, conservation-restoration and excavation project in Bat (Oman)

The documentation, conservation-restoration and excavation project in Bat (Oman)

The Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum continued its association with Omani archaeology even after its research visits. This was the background to the expert opinion provided in 2002 at the invitation of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture of the Sultanate of Oman about the remarkable Chalcolithic and Bronze Age find complex of Bat near Ibri; the aim was to clarify measures for preserving this find site, which has considerable importance for Omani archaeology.

Between 1973 and 1985, a Danish expedition under Karen Frifelt had worked here – these excavations are among the first ever carried out in Oman, and occupy a key position today. Bat is one of the most thoroughly examined Bronze Age monuments of the Arabian Peninsula. Quite rightly, the Omani government registered this rare complex as a UNESCO World Heritage Site some years ago. Recognition as such, however, requires thorough documentation, research, and comprehensive conservation-restoration work. The planned conservation-restoration work will eventually turn this more than 4000-year-old site into a lasting monument and a tourist destination.
